Celebrities Influence on our Youth Generation.

Celebrities are known for having the biggest influence in today’s modern age.

In today’s modern society children and teens are more likely to listen to the comments and influence of a celebrity rather than their parents. Some of the influences comes from the media sources that tend to thrive on negative behavior as opposed to those who are making a positive difference in life. Therefore, is important that celebrities are aware of their relevance on the youth generation and that their behavior can be responsible for the younger generations influence on music, fashion, drugs and alcohol as well as sexual activity.

The age group that is affected the most in society turns out to be our youth.

The younger generation is affected the most in society because the Internet is more accessible to the younger crowd, especially when the Internet is loaded with new social networks often that continues to grab the attention of their young minds and allow them to keep a close watch on some of their celebrity role models. The problem seen in our younger generation is that there are some celebrities who can negatively impact today’s youth. May Wildman, University of Maryland Journalism major and teachers assistant shared her thoughts about whether or not the younger generation is effected by some of the negative behaviors displayed by some of their favorite celebrities. Wildman claims “not celebrity news would affect negative behaviors such as drugs, sexual activity and alcohol but more so Television shows or movies and friends.”

Wildman also agrees, generally celebrities tend to influence the younger generations sense of fashion, mostly because the youth have more access to keep up with trends by reading magazines such as People Magazine, which allows you to catch up on any gossip or a celebrity’s current lifestyle. Social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are also the younger crowd’s gateway to keeping up with trends because these social networks allow them to keep in contact with some of their favorite celebrities so they can base their styles off of them or just because they perceive them as a role model. For example, celebrities like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez may connect to younger audiences since they are teens themselves. In fact, more programs on Television are for the younger generation. Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and MTV reach out to an audience particularly ranging from young childhood to adolescence. Wildman says the age group in her opinion that is the most effected positively by celebrities would range from eight to twelve years old because they established a skeptical point of view that has made them less impressionable to negative behavior. So once you read a certain age you are then able to tell whether or not what you are watching is positive or negative content.

 Youth are becoming susceptible to Negative behavior in society.

Today the media is everywhere society turns. Fans are able to feel a part of their favorite celebrity’s everyday life by tracking their whereabouts. It gives the younger generation a connection and a sense of closeness to celebrities. The ability to constantly know what is happening with celebrities is something that the younger generation is curious about.  However, the power of the celebrity has taken control over teens and has created negative influences in their life. I interviewed a man on the street who shared his own theory; he explained that he believes the negative behavior does not have much of an effect on society. Studies show that teens are now becoming more experimental and are linked to anything perceived as enjoyable. For example, MTV’s television station has had the largest audience coming from ages twelve through thirty-four. Out of the 32 million teenagers in America there are 8.5 million teenagers that tune in to watch this channel each day. The reality show about the lives of Italian party animals “Jersey Shore” has made history for being the most popular program on MTV. This simply means teens are attracted to watching people’s open lives. Even though the characters on the show represent alcoholics, and are constantly showing  sexual activity, it is clear that teens will follow anything perceived as cool according to  follow the narrow road Since the show aired,teens began mocking the celebrities of the show and carrying on their tradition of being party animals.

Do Celebrities have a positive or negative effect?

Whether or not celebrities actually have a positive or negative effect will remain as a huge debate. According to 68 percent of Americans, people would agree that celebrities have a negative effect on teens and 32 percent claim that they have more of a positive effect on the younger generation.

Truth is that good deeds tend to be outweighed, whenever a celebrity messes up therefore society is responsible for fueling the fire and promoting impractical lifestyles that some of our favorite celebrities live.From my research, I believe that celebrities have the biggest effect on the younger generation because this generation are vulnerable to celebrity influences.

Negative Behavior displayed in the Entertainment Industry

I had trouble coming up with a specific angle for what I wanted to do regarding the entertainment industry but I finally came up with how the different ways negative behavior is portrayed in the Entertainment industry. I want to dig deep and explain how this differentiates from the result of regular people and non-celebrities have on society and the media whenever they do something that is frowned upon. For example things may not be as important or made as big as a deal if a non-celebrity did something horrible like domestic violence rather than a celebrity. I think that this is an important issue to address because I feel as though if you are famous there is more pressure that goes along with it than if you were just a regular person, also the consequences seem less harsh whenever you are famous from what I've seen because I guess celebrities deserve or get special treatment. I will talk about how negative behavior affects not just themselves but also society because I think sometimes they get distracted when it comes to realizing how influential they are on people’s lives. Two or three questions I would ask my expert would be is what affect would your favorite celebrity have on your life if you found out they committed a serious crime such as murder or abuse? Another question I would ask is Why is it that celebrities seem to have more responsibility of being cautious of not doing anything wrong, and why do such minuscule things they do wrong actually become a huge problem? 

I think my expert could respond to a news story or a study related to the topic because I feel as though this question is asked often. 

Virtue Ethics affect on Journalism

Character or virtue ethics is one of the four major systems of ethical reasoning. The reason why I chose this system was because I strongly agree when the book states “in virtue ethics, you are virtuous because of your character, which gives you the ability to conduct your life according to the best virtues.” I personally had another definition of character which is basically the traits that you have but generally they mean the same thing. It turns out that character and virtue actually mean the same thing. For example you are virtuous because of your character. This allows you to conduct your life according to which best virtue you fit. http://www.iep.utm.edu/virtue/  I think my virtues would be responsible, because I had to learn a lot of things on my own and grow up fast and I would say that I represent honesty very well because it was something I was taught. Honesty goes a long way because I believe it is the key of living a positive lifestyle.

Another reason why I chose this ethical system was because I wanted to learn more about it. I wanted to dig deeper about how character was formed and where it came from. To me character definitely shows who you are and it is important that you maintain positive characteristics. I feel like if you are negative then this will affect your lifestyle in a negative way. If you show characteristics that you are courageous and honest then it makes life a whole lot easier instead of going through life knowing people don’t trust you or can’t even count on you. Every day in life you see a person’s character change, especially with celebrities and the harsh realities they have to deal with having that much attention from the media. For example, in my opinion I would say critics and paparazzi focus less on celebrities that are always showing good virtue ethics. Instead they would rather spend their time on capturing a celebrity with bad virtue ethics, just because it will probably make a more exciting story or because they are constantly thinking “What wrong will they do next?” I could understand why this could be a hard thing to do because I feel that bad virtue ethics is the result of handling pressure. http://atheism.about.com/od/ethicalsystems/a/virtueethics.htm 

History

The book states that virtue ethics is the oldest of the ethical systems, with a history that has its roots in some of our earliest religions. You should not get confused however; “acting modest or selfless, when in fact you do not really feel those traits does not make you virtuous.” The reason is because you are breaking another virtue which happens to be honesty. There is a huge list of virtues that we should follow since they were created by Greeks and other great thinkers but how can we follow these virtues if sometimes the people that made them have fallen short of their own list? The best answer for that is because virtue ethics just gives us a map on the best ways to live our lives but it doesn't necessarily give us an exact direction on how to do that. It is obvious that virtue ethics is old fashioned seeing as though it is the oldest ethical system but it is important in recent years among media and ethics. These characteristics or virtues are what makes a human.

Virtue-based ethics broken down

There are two virtue-based ethics, known as the Golden Rule which is described as doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. Before reading this chapter I had a different perspective of what the Golden Rule was. I always thought the golden rule was a person’s most valuable rule that they will always follow no matter what situation they are in. The book mentions a good example when it says that “By treating the person with respect and dignity and asking yourself if you would want to be treated in the same way in that situation.” My parents always stressed this method to me because this will allow you to not have a problem with anyone and it makes life a lot easier. The other ethic is the Golden Mean which is one of the oldest ethical principles. Applying the Golden Mean to journalism would involve people trying to find balance and fairness among all sides of an issue. This must not be mistaken by giving each side the same amount of importance but rather judging which side is more important.
